5 Problems with Barn Weddings: What You Need to Know and How to Fix Them

By Terry Meadows

Are you considering a barn wedding but wondering if it’s the right fit for you?

Do you know what barn wedding challenges you might face with this rustic option?

At Zion Springs, we've hosted weddings since 2010 and are committed to helping couples make informed decisions about their big day.

In this article, we explore common issues with barn wedding challenges, offering solutions and insight along the way to help you avoid surprises on your wedding day.

The Appeal and Challenges of Barn Weddings

Barn weddings offer a romantic, rustic charm that appeals to many couples. However, the same elements that make barns unique can also create potential hurdles. Here's a breakdown of common issues to be aware of and some rustic wedding solutions to help address them:

1. Weather Woes and Inconsistent Climate Control

Barns, while picturesque, often lack adequate heating or air conditioning, meaning your event might suffer if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Especially in the cooler months, barns can get chilly, and during summer, they can become uncomfortably hot.

Solution: Check if the barn has a temperature control system or if renting portable heaters or fans is an option. If you’re getting married in the fall or winter, it’s crucial to prepare guests for possible temperature fluctuations with shawls or blankets.

2. Limited Amenities and Restroom Facilities

Many barns were not originally designed for hosting large events, meaning they might not have sufficient restroom facilities or accessible spaces for elderly or disabled guests.

Solution: Before booking, confirm how many restrooms are available and if they’re up to your standards. Some barns allow for the rental of luxury portable restrooms or restroom trailers, which can be a game changer for guest comfort.

3. Restricted Noise Levels and Curfews

Barns located in rural areas may be subject to local noise ordinances or curfews. Your perfect late-night party might be cut short due to restrictions imposed by the surrounding community or the barn venue itself.

Solution: Speak with the venue about any noise limitations or event cut-off times. You can also discuss alternatives, such as hosting an after-party at a nearby location or transitioning to acoustic music as the evening progresses. At Zion Springs, while our noise ordinance requires the music to end by 11 p.m., the celebration continues  with guests gathering around our fire pits to enjoy late-night bites, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that keeps the festivities going long into the night.

Even though it rained at times on both Friday and Saturday, the staff wiped off and made accessible all of the fire pits and outdoor couches without us ever having to ask.

Logistical Challenges and Costs

Logistical challenges and costs can quickly add up when planning a barn wedding, as rural locations often require extra arrangements like rentals, transportation, and parking.

4. Limited Parking and Access

Since barns are often located in rural settings, they may lack sufficient parking or easy access for larger vehicles such as shuttles and limousines. Gravel roads and muddy fields can also create difficulties for guests and vendors, posing significant barn wedding challenges.

Solution: Ask the venue if there’s designated parking for guests or if shuttle services can be arranged. It’s also helpful to inform guests in advance if they’ll be parking in a field or on gravel so they can plan their footwear accordingly.

5. Additional Rentals and Décor

Barns usually provide a blank canvas, meaning you’ll have to rent tables, chairs, lighting, and sometimes even a dance floor. While this allows for creative freedom, it can significantly increase your wedding budget.

Solution: Inquire whether the barn venue partners with rental companies or provides any basic furniture or lighting. If not, get quotes for rentals early in your planning process to avoid sticker shock later.
